It’s truly terrifying the amount of chemicals in our daily lives.

In our food.

In the products we use to clean our houses.

and even in the beauty products we use daily.

It’s an epidemic.

And whats more, is we are poisoning ourselves.

In my personal life, I have known many people with cancer.

My grandmother died from it.

One of my best friends is a survivor. He’s in his 20s.

Toxic Chemicals in Everyday Cleaning Products

Proposition 65 is a bill passed in the early 1980´s in California.

It requires that any toxic product known to cause birth defects or cancer be labelled on products.

Furthermore, the bill required that every year the list be updated with cancer causing chemicals.

Chemicals that are found in everyday life:

“These chemicals include additives or ingredients in pesticides, common household products, food, drugs, dyes, or solvents. Listed chemicals may also be used in manufacturing and construction, or they may be byproducts of chemical processes, such as motor vehicle exhaust.”

The list of chemicals has over 900 chemicals.

It’s really astounding, and yet many of us continue to use those dangerous products to clean our homes.

Because we are lazy or careless?

No, probably not.

It’s probably because we are caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life to take a step back and commit to changing our house cleaning products.

It’s not an easy task.

In fact, it takes a lot of planning and forethought.

It’s not something that from one day to the next you can decide to do.

That path might work for the first month or so.

But then you might run out of laundry detergent, and your child’s soccer uniform needs to be washed by tomorrow..so you swing by the grocery store and buy laundry detergent on sale because you have to make it home to cook dinner and walk the dog.

Homemade Natural Cleaning Products

So how can we break the cycle?

How can we begin to take care of ourselves and our families by using natural cleaning products?

The answer is simple: get organized.

The doing it part is a little more difficult. That actually takes execution.

But I’ll tell you one thing.

If using natural, homemade cleaning products could have kept my grandmother alive. I would have done it in a heartbeat.

I would have spent whatever it took, time, money to make sure she stayed alive.

How to Build your DIY Organic Cleaning Supply Repertoire

How do I get organized?

Step 1. Write down all of the products you use in your home to clean it (I have a separate article here for beauty products) (and here for food). This list might take a while to write. Your first brainstorming session might not have everything you actually use on it.

Step 2. Choose 1 item…yes just one…and find a good recipe for that product. List the ingredients and the cost of the ingredients.

To choose a good recipe you can try this book! I love it, and have found many easy, simple recipes in it. Or….just look online there are hundreds of thousands of free resources available!

Step 3. Gather the ingredients. Mark the date you begin gathering the materials, and the date you finally have all of the materials. Finally mark the date that you make the product. This will help you figure out when you need to start reordering.

Step 4. When you’re getting low, around 50%, look back to your calendar and figure out how long you need to prepare another recipe.

Step 5. Look back. How did this go? Did you like the recipe or do you want to try another one? Get the free guide with all the questions you need to ask yourself.
