What Habits Are

(how they work)

A habit is a very simple thing. It follows a set pattern. It starts with a trigger, moves to a routine or habit, and ends in a reward >>>>>>

A Trigger is an event or situation that cues you to do something.

A Routine is the habit you perform.

A Reward is anything good you get from doing the habit.

Let’s look at the example of eating junk food. Which Polly has a real problem with.

Polly gets home from work, and walks into the kitchen, she’s feeling a little stressed, and sees the bag of Lay’s potato chips (trigger here is arriving home, feeling stressed, and seeing the chips).

Almost without thinking, she walks over to the bag of chips, tears it open and sticks her hand right in (the habit or routine).

By the end she’s feeling temporarily better about herself, the salty chips, and the satisfying crunch have made her feel a little bit better about getting yelled at by her boss this morning (the reward).

That’s how all habits are formed and operate!

Easy to understand right?

Well let’s get to the changing them part.

The Step-by-Step Plan to Changing Your Habits

To change your habits you simply need to interrupt the trigger, routine, reward cycle.

To start a new habit, create a new trigger, routine, reward cycle.

Let’s begin with changing existing habits.

  1. Replace the routine with something good or healthy.

One way to change a bad habit into a good one is to simply replace the bad habit with something good.

Let’s look at the example of Polly above. Polly understands how to hack her habits so instead of putting the Lay’s on display she hides them in the back of the cupboard, and instead prepares a healthier snack of peanut butter and an apple in the fridge.

That way when she comes home, voilá she’s got a healthy snack option, and still gets her reward, it’s just slightly different.

2. Disrupt the trigger.

Another way to change a bad habit is to disrupt the trigger. In the previous example, this is the act of hiding the Lay’s chips bag.

Because seeing the bag is what triggers the routine for Polly. She’s still dealing with stress from work, she still arrives home, but when she does she finds a different trigger waiting for her.

To start a new habit, simply create a new cycle!

3. Let’s imagine that you want to create an entirely new habit, like flossing for example.

To do this you simple choose a new or existing trigger (hint: choosing an existing trigger is easier), in this case that might be brushing your teeth.

When you turn off the water, and place your toothbrush back into it’s holder, that is your new trigger.

Your new routine is to floss. My biggest hint here is to make this part as easy as possible. Pre-cut some lengths of floss, place the floss in an obvious place, leave yourself a note.

And then you need to choose a new reward. Make it something fun, like a happy dance, a spray of some yummy mouth spray, or a tick mark on your habit tracker. Anything that gives you a sense of accomplishment or satisfaction!

Want more ideas on how to build new habits. You gotta check this book out, I got it on audible and listened to it non-stop on my way to and from work last year. Totally worth it!

How the Subconscious Mind Sometimes Interferes

The subconscious mind is a whole topic in and of itself.

So in this article I’ll just give you a quick heads up on what to expect.

Your subconscious mind tries to protect you, and keep you in your comfort zone. That’s its main job in life. Which is cool, you know, for survival and stuff. But sometimes, when we want to make real changes, it can get in the way.

In the habit tracker that you can download for free below I walk you through the steps of working with your subconscious mind, NOT against it. So be sure to grab that, as it can really make or break you.
